Bagpipe/Cello Concert - January 26 - 4:30pm

Karin Loya and Bob Mitchell

Bob and Karin.JPG

A pipe-centric Celtic duet featuring Scottish "indoor" small pipes and cello (known for its place in 1700’s Scottish musical history).  The unique blend of instruments captures the vibrancy as well as the subtlety of Scottish pipe music and other Celtic traditions.

The musicians are seasoned professionals who bring together new and exciting interpretations of traditional piping tunes, airs, jigs, reels, strathspeys, and marches.   In addition to ancient Scottish piping classics and rarities, the bands repertoire includes tunes from Ireland, other Celtic lands, Cape Breton, and contemporary composers.

The performance will focus on the songs and verse of Scotland's legendary poet, Robert Burns.

About the Performers:

Karin Loya was for many years a member of Fynesound, and plays with A Sheep at the Wheel, as well as The Splendid Shilling Consort.

Bob Mitchell was for many years a member of Iona, as well as Jennifer Cutting’s Ocean Orchestra. In addition to performing on the small pipes, he is a Highland piper in demand for weddings, festivals, and special events.

Each musician has released CDs over the years.  Bob Mitchell is recorded on a number CDs of  Iona, a  pan-Celtic band based in the Washington area.  Two of Karin Loya’s recordings are with her  long-time band, Fynesound, a Scottish and Irish quartet of harp, cello, fiddle, and vocals , and in 2010, she released “A Sheep at the Wheel” with fiddler Becky Ross and pianist Julie Gorka.

They are featured on “ The Sound of Sleat “  CD, together, with Tabby Finch and Pat Egan.
